Esters of propane acid

LC2.4.3.2
Esters of propane acid
Esters of propane acid

Description

Carboxylic acid esters are often very aromatic compounds. They are the products of an esterification in which carboxylic acids react with alcohols with the elimination of a water molecule. In this experiment, the students themselves make 2 esters from propanoic acid (propionic acid), which are known for their aromatic smell. The students realise that aromas can be created from bad-smelling substances through a reaction. At the same time, they learn about an acid-catalysed reaction with esterification.
