Molecular structure and colour
Molecular structure and colour

Description

In this experiment, the relationship between molecular structure and colourfulness is illustrated by using the example of the dye lycopene. The red dye of the tomato is a long-chain molecule with a conjugated π-electron system. In this experiment, bromine adds to double bonds of the dye molecule, causing a shift in the wavelength range in which the π-electron system absorbs light.
